“Enable The Disables Walking Out of Limitations”
WHAT IS DOWN SYNDROME (DS)?
Down Syndrome (DS) is a genetic disorder that affects 1 in 800 to 1,000 babies. The disorder involves chromosomes which are the structures within our cells that contain our genetic makes-up and determine every thing about us from our shoe size to our hair colour. Usually egg and sperm cells each have 23 chromosomes totalling 46 chromosomes. DS is caused when there is a split in 21st chromosome. DS individuals have 47 chromosomes instead of 46. This extra chromosome interferes in how the body develops. There are 3 types of DS: Trisomy 21, Mosaic DS and Translocation DS.
