WHAT IS DOWN SYNDROME (DS)?

Down Syndrome (DS) is a genetic disorder that affects 1 in 800 to 1,000 babies. The disorder involves chromosomes which are the structures within our cells that contain our genetic makes-up and
determine every thing about us from our shoe size to our hair colour. Usually egg and sperm cells each have 23 chromosomes totalling 46 chromosomes. DS is caused when there is a split in 21st chromosome. DS individuals have 47 chromosomes instead of 46. This extra chromosome interferes in how the body develops. There are 3 types of DS: Trisomy 21, Mosaic DS and Translocation DS.

WHAT ARE THE CHARACTERISTICS OF DS ?

– Smaller than normal or abnormal shaped head
– Protruding tongue
– Short fingers
– Flattened nose
– Retardation of normal growth
– Congenital heart defects
– Small mouth
– Upward stanting eyes
– Hands are short and broad
– Soeech and language delays
– Single crease in the palm
– Excessive flexibility

DS is associated with a number of medical problems like heart abnormalities, hearing loss, poor vision, infections, leukemia, thyroid disorders and Alzheimer.

IS THERE A TREATMENT FOR DS?

The most effective treatment is an Early Intervention Education Programme coupled with therapies like speech and certain physical exercises (sensory-integrative). Intervention by psychologists and other professionals are often needed in behaviour modification. Each program has to be individually tailored – made for DS person by qualified professionals.

IS SUCH TREATMENT AVAILABLE IN MALAYSIA?

Yes, but only in a few urban centres and the professional resources available are limited.
